About Werner Haas plays Claude Debussy Piano Works Vol 1

Images, L 110 & L 111 is a suite of six compositions for solo piano by Claude Debussy. They were published in two books/series, each consisting of three pieces. The first book was composed between 1901 and 1905, and the second book was composed in 1907. The total duration is approximately 30 minutes. With respect to the first series of Images, Debussy wrote to his publisher, Jacques Durand: "Without false pride, I feel that these three pieces hold together well, and that they will find their place in the literature of the piano ... to the left of Schumann, or to the right of Chopin... "

Children's Corner, L. 113, is also a six-movement suite for solo piano. It was published by Durand in 1908, and was first performed by Harold Bauer in Paris on 18 December that year. Debussy composed Children's Corner between 1906 and 1908. He dedicated the suite to his daughter, Claude-Emma (known as "Chou-Chou"), who was born on 30 October 1905 in Paris. She is described as a lively and friendly child who was adored by her father. She was three years old when he dedicated the suite to her in 1908.

Werner Haas (March 3, 1931 – October 11, 1976) was a German classical pianist. He was known for his performances of early 20th century compositions, particularly those of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. He had a wide repertoire that also included works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Frédéric Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitry Kabalevsky, and the complete works for piano and orchestra by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany and attended the Stuttgart Academy of Music. Later he was a student of Walter Gieseking in his Saarbrücken master-classes. His recording of the complete works of Debussy was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque in 1962. Other recordings of Ravel by Haas were given the Amsterdam Edison Prize, in 1970.

Haas recorded the complete cycle of Debussy's solo piano works between 1959 and 1963. The works on this album were recorded in Paris between 1959 and 1961.
